How Is a Tote Bag Actually Measured?
A tote has three dimensions and one that is routinely omitted:
- Width — across the front, laid flat.
- Height — from the base to the top opening, not including the handles.
- Gusset — the depth of the base and sides. A flat bag has none.
- Handle drop — the vertical distance from the top of the bag to the inside top of the handle. This is the number that gets left out.
Height measured with handles included versus excluded is one of the most common sources of a dispute over a delivered bag. State explicitly that height excludes handles, and give the handle drop as a separate figure, and this disappears entirely.
What Tote Bag Size Covers Most Use Cases?
These are the ranges the market has settled around. Treat them as orientation and confirm the exact figures against a supplier's specification sheet — they are conventions, not standards:

How Does the Gusset Change the Bag?
A flat tote and a gusseted tote of the same width and height are not competitors — they are different items. A flat bag carries paper, fabric and thin goods; add a 10 cm base and it carries boxes, jars and groceries standing upright. The gusset also changes how the bag behaves empty: flat bags fold away into a pocket, gusseted bags stand up on a shelf, which matters if the bag itself is being merchandised.
It costs fabric, though. A gusset adds material across the base and both sides, so the same headline dimensions with a deep gusset consume noticeably more fabric per bag — which is why two quotes for "a 38 × 41 tote" can differ substantially before anyone has discussed fabric weight.
What Handle Drop Do You Need?
Two conventions dominate:
- Short handles, roughly 15–20 cm drop — hand-carried. Cheaper, uses less webbing, fine for light loads and short distances.
- Long handles, roughly 25–30 cm drop — clears a shoulder, including over a coat. This is what makes a bag a daily carry rather than an occasional one.
If the bag is meant to be used regularly — which is the entire point of a branded bag — specify the shoulder-capable drop. It is a small cost difference and a large difference in how often the bag leaves the house.
How Does Size Affect What You Pay?
Fabric is the dominant variable cost in a plain tote, and fabric consumption scales with the whole surface: front, back, gusset, base, hem and handles. Going up one size step is not a rounding error on the quote — it changes the material content of every unit in the run. Handle length compounds it, since webbing is priced by the metre and every bag needs two.
Which suggests a practical sequence: fix the size against the use case first, then choose the fabric weight that size demands, and only then compare prices. Choosing a fabric weight before the size is settled means re-quoting.
How Should You Specify Size So Quotes Are Comparable?
- Width × height × gusset, in one unit system, stating that height excludes handles.
- Handle drop as a separate number, plus webbing width if it matters to you.
- What it has to hold — naming the actual contents (a 15" laptop, six wine bottles, a week of groceries) lets a supplier catch a dimension that will not work.
- Tolerance — a small variance is normal on sewn goods. Agreeing the acceptable range before production is what keeps it from becoming an argument after delivery.
